I drove by the Lee Monument today and took a few photos. I've driven by it many times but never stopped to really look at it. The graffiti makes everyone stop and stare. People kept passing by on their way to observe it up close. I spent some time reading all the graffiti and watching the people climb onto the monument for pictures. Ironically, I've never seen people engaging with this statue or even setting foot on the grass island, until now. The more I looked at the giant statue, the more uncomfortable it made me feel. It's in the center of a large roundabout. It towers over everything and is quite intimidating. Nothing about the monument is inviting. I'm glad it's coming down. I'm curious about what will replace it. Maybe something that bring people together, rather than repelling them. - #monumentave #takeitdown #leemonument #rva
